Community Gardens in Suffolk County

KNOW BEFORE YOU GROW
To join others in a team effort

growing food in a space that permits access, guided by rules, and encourages others to share the responsibilities of maintaining a site and harvesting with others.

5-10 dedicated gardeners lead & guide others

Grow what you will eat or donate to others

Space use permission, liability/insurance understood, soil & water have been tested, ease of access

Operation hours, roles & responsibilities, resource sharing, communicating, gardening practices, community etiquette

Commitment to assuming site responsibilities: spring maintenance, planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, fall cleanup

LEADERSHIP Bottom up only, engaging as many as possible.

Top down approach fails after first season.

One or two leaders can’t “run” a community garden. Success requires at least 5-10 actively engaged members who share key community gardening roles.

SKIN in the GAME Plots may have nominal fee. User agreement signed. Failure to follow rules may result in penalties.
EDUCATION Offer workshops on planting techniques, companion plants, organic approaches, weeds & watering, disease prevention. Consult CCE Master Gardeners.
COMMUNICATION Identify ways to share information & questions via email, phone or social media. Identify 2-3 members who will take on this key role. Also set up a marker board at the site to share messages.
TROUBLESHOOTING Have plans in place…when deer knock down the fence, cucumber beetles devour crops, vegetables or tools go missing, a gardener cuts his hand, garden beds have been neglected for a month.
HARVESTING Learn when to harvest crops before they spoil. Have sources to accept excess food been identified? How will food get there for distribution?
COMMUNITY & COMRADERIE Celebrate this community effort with members and with guests at least twice a season. Consider an opening day gathering, a wild weeder’s night, or a harvest feast.
